Sigita's testimonial
Sigita Sinkunaite, Age 24
Nationality: Lithuanian
Purpose of coming to Aarhus/course: Master studies, exchange program
Duration of stay: September 1st 07 and stayed for 8 months

What made you decide to come to Aarhus to study?
The description of the studies programme sounded really attractive and interesting. Also, it had to be one of the Scandinavian countries as they are of free of charge for EU citizens.

How did you experience your first month here?
During the first few weeks felt a little lonely because didn’t know anyone in Aarhus, but later started to get to know more course mates and spend time with them. From the studies perspectives, first weeks were a bit chaotic because nobody explained the whole system and I had to figure it out from people around.

How and where did you find accommodation?
I applied for one of the rooms in dormitories.

Is Denmark academically different to what you are used to? Level of teaching, methods, etc…
It is quite different. It was hard to get used to start calling your teacher by name and overall, the communication with the professors is quite informal. During class, students are expected to participate in it and not only take notes.

Is it easy to be ‘foreign’ in Denmark?
Not really. When shopping you have to use common sense of what you’re buying. Even though Danes speak really good English I was missing it when I needed it the most: doing my paperwork, in the shops, etc. But it’s really nice to watch TV in English.

Can you recommend any particular going-out/hanging-out places?
University bars, Friday bars – when on the budget, there are a few really nice places by the river.

Do you have any advice that you would like to pass on to future international students?
Discover the city, the surroundings, parties and people by yourself. I am sure everyone will find something to enjoy, and someone to enjoy it with, as the city is full of internationals. Also, keep yourself updated. The International secretariat’s newsletter was very helpful to discover which things were going on.
